Upgrading your kitchen is one of the best remodeling projects you can do, as it both increases your home value and enhances a room that you and your family spend the most time utilizing. If you’ve made the wise choice to remodel your kitchen, then the next step is to choose a contractor who will do professional work in a timely manner.

Since this is such a key decision, it’s important to research more than one contractor in order to compare and choose the best fit for you. There are 3 critical questions you should ask when choosing your kitchen remodeling contractor:

  1. What references does the company have?
First-hand referrals from friends and relatives are usually the way to go, but if those aren’t available, it’s important to ask for and interview at least 3 references. Try to talk to clients who have projects that were completed within the past year. Find out whether the contractor hired any subcontractors and whether the workers were professional and timely. Ask if there were any hitches with the remodel and whether they were pleased overall with the final outcome. Also, make sure to check their Better Business Bureau ratings.

  2. How many actual kitchen remodels have they done?
There are many general contractors out there who have remodeled anything from basements to room additions but may lack specific kitchen experience. Find out how long the company has been in business, what their ratio of kitchens to other projects is, and whether they have a good track record with kitchens. You may want to avoid entrusting a start-up company with the kitchen of your dreams. Make sure to find out whether the contractor also does the design of the remodel.

  3. What insurance, licensing and additional credentials does the contractor have?
Check their website or call the company to find out about their credentials. Contractors should carry personal liability, workers compensation and property damage coverage. Ask to see the contractor’s insurance and make sure it’s current. As far as licensing requirements they vary my state and municipality, so make sure to check with your local building department.

After researching several contractors, compare their references, experience and credentials in order to choose the one that you feel most comfortable and confident.
